My hair background
I was born with white blonde hair which remained blonde up until I was about 10, when it gradually got darker over the years to a dark blonde / mousy brown colour. Also, my hair started off relatively straight, and got curlier and curlier as the years went by. My Mum started going grey at 16, and genetics being what they are, so did I! Over the years I dyed my hair all sorts of colours from platinum blonde, to deep dark brown and finally to copper red which I kept for about 12 years. The constant root touch-ups were frying my hair and I could never grow it long. Added to that, giving birth to 3 children over 3 years had caused major post partum hair loss. I cut it reasonably short (which makes it wavy rather than curly, my hair has ringlety spirals when it’s longer and just waves when it’s shorter). I absolutely refuse to have long hair just for the sake of having long hair, it needs to be HEALTHY and it needs to look great, and mine just wasn’t .

The appeal of Henna
I recently read some books about natural health and the common opinion amongst them was that there are too many chemicals in our environment, in our homes, on our bodies and INSIDE our bodies. I have been making an effort to de-chemical my life and so finding an alternative to the chemical hair dyes I was using seemed logical. Added to that, I really don’t like hair salons AT ALL (after some bad experiences….it’s a curly thing I think) and so anything that hairdressers DON’T recommend seems like a good idea to me! I did my research, and came across the Henna for Hair site. I’d never seen more relevant information on Henna (and associated products) in all my searching. And the Forum, has been such an invaluable resource for me. I found out that Henna was NOT harmful to hair, but it was actually GOOD for hair. It added strength, thickness, shine and overall good condition. And, I’d read, in most cases could even out your colour. (I was suffering from that “intense roots / faded lengths” problem that you sometimes get with chemical dyes…especially red dyes). Sounded too good to be true….so I took the plunge to find out!

My first mix
I had ordered some Body Art Quality Henna from Catherine, but got impatient for it to arrive and went out and bought some Henna powder from the health food shop. The guy in the shop knew nothing about Henna at all and couldn’t vouch for it’s freshness or it’s quality. I still bought it, because it was cheap and looked OK J I mixed up about 3 heaped tablespoons of the Henna and about 4 heaped tablespoons of vanilla full fat yoghurt and a few drops of Lavendar EO (this wasn’t quite enough mixture for my shorter than shoulder length hair, but I made it stretch). It mixed into a nice thick cream, and I left it covered up under my heater for 8 hours. I reckon I got dye release but it was hard to tell, so I put it on my head at about 6pm same night. It went on really easily, no drips or mess to speak of. It had the consistency of honey and smelled rather nice :) I then Gladwrapped my head, put on a woolly thermal beanie and did some work on my PC. 4 hours later, I got in the shower and washed it out. It was like washing out mud! But it came out easily.

At first, I didn't notice much. My hair did feel nice and soft though. I went to bed pretty much straight afterwards. When I got up next morning it looked a lovely bright copper colour (which I love!), but it wasn't drastic for me as my colour was a copper red anyway. My roots were a bit fluro orange (where the greys are) but it all oxidised over the next few days to a PERFECT copper colour and was so even!! My roots and lengths looked the same colour finally and it did not fade at all!!!! My curls/waves looked lovely and shiny and bouncy, and I didn’t need to use much conditioner (if any at all). I was excited….I’d finally found the holy grail of hair colours.
